Tom Volkar Photo

In addition to coaching and speaking, members of the Pittsburgh Coaches Association conduct workshops and seminars and for several years have also conducted teleclasses on a regular basis. These teleclasses are now held monthly, and are an opportunity for Pittsburgh coaches to share some of their coaching knowledge and experience with participants, as well as their passion for helping others to move forward and reach new levels.

Teleclass topics range from sales and marketing to creating space, leadership, and finding your dreams, and can help people to make important changes and take steps to reach their potential.

This month we are featuring Laura Crooks' teleclass: Discover the Exercise You Love. Do you spend more time lamenting your lack of exercise than actually exercising? Would you like to create an exercise program you really enjoy? Join this teleclass with Laura Crooks to renew your enthusiasm for exercise and discover how you can add enjoyable exercise to your day. As we review the 4 components of a sound exercise plan you can match your exercise goal to your preferred exercise style. Apply your knowledge as we discuss how to establish the habit of exercising regularly.

Laura Crooks is an RN, certified wellness coach, speaker, and educator who helps busy women create solutions to achieve their ideal vision of well-being. She combines her many years as a registered nurse with her experience in adult education and her coaching training to create her unique blend of education and coaching.

SPECIAL by Diana Fletcher - How to Master the Emotional Patterns that Control Your Life

How to Master the Emotional Patterns that Control Your Life

By Diana Fletcher

A still mind brings the infinite joy and love for which we were born.

Physical exercise can clear your mind and keep stress under control.
        -Prescription for Nutritional Healing

At the height of laughter, the universe is flung into a kaleidoscope of new possibilities.
        -Jean Houston

What are you feeling right now?

How would you describe your state of consciousness?

What excites you?

What do you feel passionate about?

What makes you sad or happy?

What makes you feel nervous or agitated?

Why do we have such a mixture of feelings?

Our emotions, our mental activities, and our physical parts are all connected. We have patterns that influence every part of this connection.

Our physical and mental states all come together in creating our emotional state. When you take care of your mind and your body, you will take care of your emotions. We cannot separate any of these patterns.

These patterns are all important parts of your life and so interconnected, that they cannot be separated without resulting in suffering. When you think in ways that are not positive, when you don't take care of your body, your emotions end up all over the place.

Then you may describe yourself as "stressed" or "depressed" or "anxious." You can master these emotions by taking care of the other important parts. By making sure your thoughts are aligned with what you truly want in your life, by making sure your physical needs are being met in a totally healthy fashion, you can create the emotional balance than sends you to a wonderful place---a place where you are living the life you truly want to live.

How do you achieve the healthy emotional state you want?

  1. Work on creating a home environment that is stress-free by lowering sound volume on the television and when you listen to music. Pay attention to how nice the quiet can be.
  2. Consider the colors in your home. Certain colors are warm, some are cool. Which ones calm you? Look around. What feeling do you get from the colors of your walls and furniture?
  3. De-clutter. Our thoughts cannot stay in a calm place if you are surrounded by a mess.
  4. Meditate. Quiet time, with complete focus on your breathing for even five minutes a day, can work wonders.
  5. Set aside "worry time." For people who have a tendency to obsess, this can be very helpful. You will know that you have a certain amount of time every day to worry, so you don't have to do it all day. You are allowed time every day to get it out. Sometimes, writing it down can be very therapeutic. Get it all out on paper. Then throw out the paper and go about your business.
  6. Admit your feelings to yourself and others. This does not mean starting arguments. It means honesty. Do not be afraid to cry sometimes.
  7. Some people find aromatherapy useful. This may be something you would like to learn more about to help you stay calm.
  8. Look for ideas in Creating Space: 38 Strategies to Help You Make Time for What's Important to help you eliminate unnecessary tasks in your life. There may be things tiring you out that you don't need to do anymore.
  9. Take vitamins. Talk to a nutritionist if you are unsure about what you need.
  10. Get massages. There are many different kinds of massage. Massage can be beneficial for a number of conditions, including stress relief. (Note: Always check with a physician before receiving deep muscle massage.)
Do not assume that you have no control over your feelings. You may find yourself surprised by your feelings, but that does not mean you cannot exert some control over them.

Look at all three areas and think about how they all connect.

We may have sad things happen.

We may have extremely upsetting things happen.

That's life.

But we can prepare ourselves for dealing with whatever happens in life by being aware of our thoughts, taking care of our physical needs in a healthy fashion, and looking at our emotional needs as something very precious.

Try not to take life too seriously. Learn to laugh.
