COACH SPOTLIGHT
Susan English: Latino Service Project

The Pittsburgh Coaches Association has undertaken a service project to support the fast-growing Latino community of Pittsburgh. It began in 2006 when Susan English, a Benedictine Sister and current president of PCA, founded the Motivadores Project (Motivador is Spanish for motivator) with grant money from the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

Susan, along with Donna Billings, past president of PCA, and Eileen Olmsted, a professional counselor, trained 14 bilingual women in peer coaching skills. These bilingual women were encouraged to reach out to newer arriving immigrants to help them adjust to their new life in Pittsburgh. Since then, an additional 11 Latino individuals, both men and women, have received training.

In 2009, Susan developed the Latino Service Project to further support and train the Motivadores. In this project, PCA members provide pro bono coaching sessions for the peer coaches. Ten PCA coaches participated in a brief training which resulted in six coaches providing over 40 hours of supportive coaching. Pro bono sessions were provided by David Wheitner, Jacqueline Dunkle, Janice Sabatine, Kathy Jo Pollock, Susan English and Susan Atkinson.

The PCA plans to continue this service project in 2010 and is currently looking for coaches who would like to participate. Coaching sessions are conducted in English although there is a need for Spanish speaking coaches as well. For more information contact Susan at smenglishedd@yahoo.com or call 412-931-0769.
